Introduction
When I graduated with a degree in Commerce, I wasn’t exactly sure what direction I wanted to go in. Like many fresh grads, I had a general sense of the business world accounting, finance, operations but nothing truly clicked. I enjoyed the structure and strategy behind commerce, but I some how need more dynamic, more creative, and linked to the rapidly changing world around me.
That’s when I discovered digital marketing and it felt like finding a space where both logic and creativity could thrive.
This is the story of how I have transmitted in to the Digital world from commerce baground, and how each step helped me shape me out a path i am truly excited about.
1. The Turning Point: Curiosity Meets Opportunity
My first real taste of digital marketing came to help a friend promote her small business online. We were considering how to view her products, and I stumbled into the world of social media advertisements, SEOs and material strategies.
I began to take a research of YouTube video, reading blocg and a free online course. As I learned, I became more attractive. There was so much happening behind the scenes of every ad, post, and search result and i wanted in.
Before I knew that it was worth searching seriously, it did not take a lot of time.
2. Learning the Ropes: Online Courses, Certifications & Self-Study
Coming from a commerce background, I knew that I needed to create a strong foundation. So I started the basics:
- Completed free courses on platforms like Google Digital Garage and Hubspot Academy
2. Learned about SEO, SEM, email marketing and analytics
3. Practiced material construction and run mock campaign
4. Google Advertisement and Meta (Facebook) certified in advertisements
What I loved the most was how hands on and measurable digital marketing was. Every campaign had data behind it. Every creative decision can be tested. It was a business but with a pulse.
3. My First Freelance Projects
Once I got some knowledge under my belt, I made a short start: with helping friends and local businesses with their online presence.
I created Instagram strategies, basic advertising campaigns, websites adapted for search, and even wrote blog content. The results were not so perfect, but learning was priceless.
Each project taught me how to:
- Communicate with customers
- Set goals and expectations
- Analyze the results and pivot strategies
- Keep learning and adapting
Analyze the results and axis strategies
Keep learning and adopt these initial victories gave me the confidence to start looking at digital marketing not only as a passion, but also as a possible career.
4. Where I Am Now: Still Learning,
Today I actively build my skills, work on personal projects and are constantly developing with the industry. I have learned that digital marketing is never “done” this is an area that challenges you to constantly keep you fast, creative and understand people.
My commerce background still plays a big role, it gives me the structure, business knowledge and an analytical thinking. But digital marketing gave me equipment to bring ideas to life, get in touch with real people and create online effects.
5. What’s Next
- To enhance my freelance work and searching for a full-time role
- Learning advanced topics like conversion rate optimization and automation.
- Building my personal brand and sharing what I learn.
- To teach others who want to make a similar shift in this field.
My journey has just begun, and I’m truly excited for where it’s moving to.
Conclusion
Transitioning from a commerce graduate to a digital marketing enthusiast wasn’t something I planned but it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.
It took curiosity, self learning and a lot of testing and error, but I finally felt that I am in an area where I can flourish.
If you’re from a non-tech background and wondering whether you can pivot into digital you can. All this is a desire to believe in learning, experimenting and your ability to grow.
